New Adult paranormal romance. Really not good at all; all the four and five star reviews on Amazon fooled me. Nevah again!

Been sick with the flu for the last two weeks, so I picked reading that was fluffy and easy on a headache-y brain.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

Easily my least favorite out of the three Austen novels I've read so far. Came down to the characters, I think.

Dracula by Bram Stoker.

Eh. Didn't like this classic, although there are loads of symbolism for good old Victorian-era struggles with repression vs. deviancy, especially with how the male characters love Lucy when she is "pure" and then are suddenly ready to hack off her head with "savage delight" once she's a "voluptuous" vampire.

Re-read of a very dated book in a genre I'm not familiar with. I enjoy it each time I read it, but damn if I can figure out why.

Jane Austen-lite with magic. Super enjoyable, though the ending was really rushed.

And that cover is *gorgeous*.

A secret of mine: I WILL try a book if I like the cover enough; my artist's eye always wins out over my skepticism. Rippling male torsos are a staple in the paranormal romance genre, but in this case the composition caught my eye - can't see much of the tiger below its eyes, can't see much of the man above his nose. It comes off as a playful nod to the dual-forms-yet-one-body nature of were-creatures, and is surprisingly subtle considering the cover is dominated by some dude's half-naked body.

This is all a long-winded way of saying this book joins Nightshade on the shelf of "Shifter novels where I enjoyed the cover art and not much else."

Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie.

 photo christieparty2.jpg

This was written over 30 years after the last book of hers I've read, Death on the Nile, and it's really interesting to see the differences. Not in prose or style so much as the emphasis on the decay of the nuclear family and good morals and how young men are now (1969 now, that is) foppish dandies, and what IS the world coming to? There's much less good will toward her characters in this book than what I noticed in Death on the Nile.

A Wolf At Her Door by Jasmine Aherne.

The complicated, cluttered cover art makes the artist in me cringe a little, but that has nothing to do with the story itself, which was sweeter and bubblier than I expected for a werewolf erotic romance. I enjoyed this one.

This year, I decided to challenge myself to reading 50 books, which will hopefully make a dent in my to-read pile. The first book I've finished:

Poirot Investigates by Agatha Christie.
